UKAS Certified Surface Plates

We take pride in offering premium granite surface plates engineered to deliver an exceptionally flat reference surface for your high-precision measurement and inspection needs. Our surface plates are crafted from high-quality black granite, ensuring superior durability and wear resistance. They are non-responsive to temperature changes and offer an exceptionally sturdy measuring environment due to their thickness and weight.

Every surface plate in our range adheres to BS 817 (2008) standards, demonstrating our commitment to quality.
We offer the option to include certification with your surface plate order, ensuring immediate usability upon delivery.

Surface Plates – Why Granite?

The surface plate or table is the most intensively used metrology standard in quality engineering facilities. From its early origins, having a flat precision surface was considered essential to overall operations. Initially, plates were produced from broad-planed cast iron. However, from around 1950 onwards, Crown Windley in the UK pioneered granite as an alternative to cast iron, leading to the development of what is now recognised as the UK standard BS817/2008.

Granite has become the preferred material for several compelling reasons:

  • It does not corrode
  • It is non-magnetic
  • It has a low coefficient of expansion
  • It approaches gemstone hardness
  • It is resistant to wear
  • It is very stable
  • It boasts high compressive strength
  • It can be lapped to high degrees of accuracy by hand

Granite is more accurately described as igneous rock composed of various constituent elements. At Eley Surface Plates, we seek out close-grained granite that is uniformly dark in colour and contains very hard elements. We specialise in producing granite surface plates and offer a comprehensive range of sizes.
